  • I photographed this scene of the Grand Canyon at sunset on the last day of the first 100 years of the National Park Service. About 30 minutes before sunset a thunderstorm built-up west of here near the Grand Canyon Lodge, the only storm over the canyon that evening, and slowly moved east towards Cape Royal. The timing couldn't have been more perfect as the storm opened up and the rain fell across Wotans Throne as the sun was setting. I can't think of a better way to celebrate the end of the first 100 years of our National Parks.

About 30 minutes before sunset a thunderstorm built-up west of here near the Grand Canyon Lodge, the only storm over the canyon that evening, and slowly moved east towards Cape Royal. The timing couldn't have been more perfect as the storm opened up and the rain fell into the valley west of Wotans Throne as the sun was setting. I can't think of a better way to celebrate the end of the first 100 years of our National Parks.

  • An aerial view of the snow covered burn area on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Aspens, which can be seen here as the bright green area, are often some of the first trees to grow after a forest fire.

  • The view from Cape Royal on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring vistas in the park. Under the moonlight, it takes on a mystical and other-worldly feeling, especially as the first light of the dawn breaks over the horizon behind you painting Wotans Throne in subtle light.

  • Double rainbows appear as a storm moves across the Grand Canyon. The large feature in the canyon is Coronado Butte, which is named for Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, a Spanish conquistador and explorer who led a large expedition from Mexico through the plains and parts of the southwestern United States between 1540 and 1542. Coronado had hoped to reach the Cities of Cíbola, also known as the mythical Seven Cities of Gold. His expedition marked the first European sightings of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River. The river is faintly visible through the rain between the rainbows.
