  • On May 20th, 2012, an annular solar eclipse occured and was visible from the Grand Canyon. The eclipse lasted a total of 4 minutes and 30 seconds, during which time the landscape was gently bathed in an eerie light with a subdued color palette...An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, but the Moon's apparent diameter is smaller than that of the sun.

  • Autumn is about more than the colors of the leaves. Laying on the forest floor, the aroma of the aspens is overwhelming. Sunlight peaks through a gap in the leaves warming your face and momentarily relieving the chill in the air. The aspens gently rock back and forth as the wind blows. You close your eyes and listen to the leaves dancing until they let go and gently fall from the trees.

  • A fast moving late May storm brought low clouds and snow showers to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. As the storm cleared I was treated to this Brocken spectre and glory that lasted for only a few seconds. A Brocken spectre is an optical phenomenon where the sun casts a long shadow into the mist and fog below, and a glory is the rainbow halo that appears around the head of the person's shadow and is caused by light refracting of water droplets in the atmosphere.

  • I photographed this scene of the Grand Canyon at sunset on the last day of the first 100 years of the National Park Service. About 30 minutes before sunset a thunderstorm built-up west of here near the Grand Canyon Lodge, the only storm over the canyon that evening, and slowly moved east towards Cape Royal. The timing couldn't have been more perfect as the storm opened up and the rain fell across Wotans Throne as the sun was setting. I can't think of a better way to celebrate the end of the first 100 years of our National Parks.

  • This photograph of the Grand Canyon in the winter with a fresh blanket of snow was made in January of 2023. Much of northern Arizona was experiencing what would become a historic winter as record-breaking snowfalls fell across the area from Flagstaff to the North Rim. In this scene from Yavapai Point on the South Rim of the park, we can see Zoroaster Temple and Braham Temple cloaked by falling snow. A brief break in the storm has allowed the setting sun to briefly cast golden light upon the scene.

  • While on a multi-day river trip down the lower canyon of the San Juan River in Utah we had stopped to camp at the mouth of Slickhorn Canyon. Shortly before sunset I had set out on my own to explore Slickhorn in search of a reflecting pool. A gentle breeze moved through the canyon as I hiked along the streambed. There was a gentle rain falling as the sun broke out under the clouds and begin to illuminate the canyon walls towering above me. As this happened, a rainbow began to appear above the golden cliffs radiating warm light of sunset juxtaposed against the cold dark skies of the clearing storm. There I stood, alone, in the middle of a red rock wilderness, overwhelmed the by the sheer scale and beauty of the landscape I was immersed in. To this day it remains one of the single greatest moments I've experienced in nature.
