  • A fast moving late May storm brought low clouds and snow showers to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. As the storm cleared I was treated to this Brocken spectre and glory that lasted for only a few seconds. A Brocken spectre is an optical phenomenon where the sun casts a long shadow into the mist and fog below, and a glory is the rainbow halo that appears around the head of the person's shadow and is caused by light refracting of water droplets in the atmosphere.

  • As a summer monsoon storm clears, the many temples, peaks, and buttes of the Grand Canyon emerge from the clouds, including Mount Hayden, the arrowhead-shaped peak on the left. I photographed this scene from Point Imperial, the highest viewpoint in the park at 8,803 feet above sea level located on the North Rim of the canyon.

  • A winter storm closes in upon the Grand Canyon. Clouds begin to form within the depths of the canyon and snow falls on the distant North Rim. This moment in time reminded me of a Thomas Moran painting with its wonderful sense of atmosphere and dreamy light.

  • Clouds from a winter storm had masked the view of the Grand Canyon for most of this morning. After waiting in the bitter cold for what seemed like an eternity, a break in the clouds allowed for a brief view of the canyon before the scene fogged over again.

  • In this winter scene from the Grand Canyon, the canyon walls frame Isis Temple in the distance. I had arrived at the trailhead over an hour before sunrise in near whiteout conditions. The wind was howling, and the snow was blowing sideways. I set off down the trail in the dark with my headlamp lighting the way. A short distance into the canyon, I came upon a large snowdrift that wasn't there the day before when I had scouted the scene. The snow drift was completely blocking the trail, so I felt it was unsafe to continue in the dark and decided to n to the trailhead. About 15 minutes before sunrise, I started back down the trail again, and this time I could safely make it through the snow drift and to the spot on the trail from which I could photograph the canyon. Mother nature wasn't exactly cooperating this morning, with the view into the canyon still obscured by clouds below the rim and falling snow. A little over an hour after sunrise, the storm began to clear, and I was able to photograph Isis Temple while there was still dreamy quality to the atmosphere.

  • While on a multi-day river trip down the lower canyon of the San Juan River in Utah we had stopped to camp at the mouth of Slickhorn Canyon. Shortly before sunset I had set out on my own to explore Slickhorn in search of a reflecting pool. A gentle breeze moved through the canyon as I hiked along the streambed. There was a gentle rain falling as the sun broke out under the clouds and begin to illuminate the canyon walls towering above me. As this happened, a rainbow began to appear above the golden cliffs radiating warm light of sunset juxtaposed against the cold dark skies of the clearing storm. There I stood, alone, in the middle of a red rock wilderness, overwhelmed the by the sheer scale and beauty of the landscape I was immersed in. To this day it remains one of the single greatest moments I've experienced in nature.

  • A winter storm has left a dusting of snow on the trees below the rim of the Grand Canyon. Across the canyon, Isis Temple is bathed in warm light through an opening in the clouds as the storm begins to clear.<br />
