• In this winter scene from the Grand Canyon, the canyon walls frame Isis Temple in the distance. I had arrived at the trailhead over an hour before sunrise in near whiteout conditions. The wind was howling, and the snow was blowing sideways. I set off down the trail in the dark with my headlamp lighting the way. A short distance into the canyon, I came upon a large snowdrift that wasn't there the day before when I had scouted the scene. The snow drift was completely blocking the trail, so I felt it was unsafe to continue in the dark and decided to n to the trailhead. About 15 minutes before sunrise, I started back down the trail again, and this time I could safely make it through the snow drift and to the spot on the trail from which I could photograph the canyon. Mother nature wasn't exactly cooperating this morning, with the view into the canyon still obscured by clouds below the rim and falling snow. A little over an hour after sunrise, the storm began to clear, and I was able to photograph Isis Temple while there was still dreamy quality to the atmosphere.

 • This photograph of the Grand Canyon in the winter with a fresh blanket of snow was made in January of 2023. Much of northern Arizona was experiencing what would become a historic winter as record-breaking snowfalls fell across the area from Flagstaff to the North Rim. In this scene from Yavapai Point on the South Rim of the park, we can see Zoroaster Temple and Braham Temple cloaked by falling snow. A brief break in the storm has allowed the setting sun to briefly cast golden light upon the scene.

 • The night sky over Marble Canyon and the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park.

Grand Canyon National Park achieved International Dark Sky Park certification in 2019, the same year that the park celebrated its centennial. Only nine of the 61 national parks in the United States are certified by the International Dark Sky Association, making Grand Canyon one of the best places to view and photograph the night sky.

 • I made this photograph of swooping striations within The Wave as the wind was blowing. The only auditory sense I perceived was the whispers of the wind as it swirled amongst the sandstone walls surrounding me. • As I was making this photograph, I watched grains of sand slowly tumble through this sandstone passage, and I couldn’t help but reflect on how long nature has been at work sculpting this magnificent place. • A touch of warm light graces the upper most reaches of the Grand Canyon on a winter day. I photographed this scene from Yavapai Point on the South Rim during the winter of 2022-2023, which turned out to be one of the snowiest seasons on record. Over 100 inches of snow fell on the South Rim and more than 200 inches on the North Rim.

 • Stars fill the night sky above the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. The canyon walls are being lit by the rising moon and the clouds are being strung along by high wind. From the 'Below Clear Creek' camp at river mile 84.5. Photographed using a 25-second exposure.

 • I photographed this scene of the Grand Canyon at sunset on the last day of the first 100 years of the National Park Service. About 30 minutes before sunset a thunderstorm built-up west of here near the Grand Canyon Lodge, the only storm over the canyon that evening, and slowly moved east towards Cape Royal. The timing couldn't have been more perfect as the storm opened up and the rain fell across Wotans Throne as the sun was setting. I can't think of a better way to celebrate the end of the first 100 years of our National Parks.

 • As a summer monsoon storm clears, the many temples, peaks, and buttes of the Grand Canyon emerge from the clouds, including Mount Hayden, the arrowhead-shaped peak on the left. I photographed this scene from Point Imperial, the highest viewpoint in the park at 8,803 feet above sea level located on the North Rim of the canyon.

 • The 'Super Blue Blood Moon' over the Grand Canyon. This event was photographed on January 30th, 2018, and it marked the second full moon of the month, thus a 'Blue Moon.' It was also closer to Earth than usual making it a 'super' moon. And, the moon was coming out of an eclipse making it a 'Blood Moon.'
