  • During the summer months, the monsoon brings thunderstorms to the deserts or Arizona. These storms often produce lots of lightning such as this display which was captured in this 7-image composite over a 20 minute period at Grand Canyon National Park in July 2012.

  • I photographed this scene of the Grand Canyon at sunset on the last day of the first 100 years of the National Park Service. About 30 minutes before sunset a thunderstorm built-up west of here near the Grand Canyon Lodge, the only storm over the canyon that evening, and slowly moved east towards Cape Royal. The timing couldn't have been more perfect as the storm opened up and the rain fell across Wotans Throne as the sun was setting. I can't think of a better way to celebrate the end of the first 100 years of our National Parks.

  • In the moment leading up to sunset, a monsoon thunderstorm made its way across the eastern edge of Grand Canyon National Park near Desert View. The sun found a clearing in the storm through which to shine and illuminate the long canyon wall known as the Palisades of the Desert. In the distance is the Colorado River and to the right is a rainbow over the Painted Desert.

  • As a summer monsoon storm clears, the many temples, peaks, and buttes of the Grand Canyon emerge from the clouds, including Mount Hayden, the arrowhead-shaped peak on the left. I photographed this scene from Point Imperial, the highest viewpoint in the park at 8,803 feet above sea level located on the North Rim of the canyon.
