  • Double rainbows appear as a storm moves across the Grand Canyon. The large feature in the canyon is Coronado Butte, which is named for Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, a Spanish conquistador and explorer who led a large expedition from Mexico through the plains and parts of the southwestern United States between 1540 and 1542. Coronado had hoped to reach the Cities of Cíbola, also known as the mythical Seven Cities of Gold. His expedition marked the first European sightings of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River. The river is faintly visible through the rain between the rainbows.
