  • I photographed this scene of the Grand Canyon at sunset on the last day of the first 100 years of the National Park Service. About 30 minutes before sunset a thunderstorm built-up west of here near the Grand Canyon Lodge, the only storm over the canyon that evening, and slowly moved east towards Cape Royal. The timing couldn't have been more perfect as the storm opened up and the rain fell across Wotans Throne as the sun was setting. I can't think of a better way to celebrate the end of the first 100 years of our National Parks.

Grand Canyon National Park achieved International Dark Sky Park certification in 2019, the same year that the park celebrated its centennial. Only nine of the 61 national parks in the United States are certified by the International Dark Sky Association, making Grand Canyon one of the best places to view and photograph the night sky.
