• Autumn is about more than the colors of the leaves. Laying on the forest floor, the aroma of the aspens is overwhelming. Sunlight peaks through a gap in the leaves warming your face and momentarily relieving the chill in the air. The aspens gently rock back and forth as the wind blows. You close your eyes and listen to the leaves dancing until they let go and gently fall from the trees.

 • This white flower, known as the Sacred Datura, is commonly found in late summer and early fall in the Grand Canyon. While it is beautiful to look at, it is also poisonous. The flower opens at nearly full dark and will wither a few hours after sunrise the following morning.

 • While on a multi-day river trip down the lower canyon of the San Juan River in Utah we had stopped to camp at the mouth of Slickhorn Canyon. Shortly before sunset I had set out on my own to explore Slickhorn in search of a reflecting pool. A gentle breeze moved through the canyon as I hiked along the streambed. There was a gentle rain falling as the sun broke out under the clouds and begin to illuminate the canyon walls towering above me. As this happened, a rainbow began to appear above the golden cliffs radiating warm light of sunset juxtaposed against the cold dark skies of the clearing storm. There I stood, alone, in the middle of a red rock wilderness, overwhelmed the by the sheer scale and beauty of the landscape I was immersed in. To this day it remains one of the single greatest moments I've experienced in nature.

 • Hopi House on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. From the National Park Service website..."The Hopi House (1905) is a large, multi-story building of stone masonry, shaped and built like a Hopi pueblo. When Mary Colter was commissioned in 1904 by the Fred Harvey Company to design an “Indian Arts Building” as the hospitality giant liked to call their souvenir shops, the talented and stubborn architect was eager to accept the challenge. She was one of just a few women in a male-dominated field, and “lady-like” wasn’t in her vocabulary. Neither were the words “traditional European influences.” Colter’s vision extended well beyond that. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Grand Canyon, she wanted to design something that appeared native, natural and timeless.

Hopi House, modeled after the 10,000 year-old pueblo dwellings of the Hopi village in Old Oraibi, was a radically new experience for tourists. Colter’s attention to detail and human history created a strange and exotic world they could easily and safely enjoy."
